strike out boldly
learn from the collective
beware of hand-held treats
always appear negotiable then
walk away with tail held high
mice and high heels are fair game
scratching behind the ears can be
used against you
you can take the loner persona a bit too far
the best part of the day is reserved for
sleeping it away
you can say i'm yours and i won't disagree but
i'll keep you up at night wondering where i am
i am beautiful but you know that
it's harder than it looks

it occurred to her by Regina C J Green
a small hand finds a pair of glasses
and there's a wayward shoe next to
a ribbon of early light bending its way
across a dark carpeted floor
a yawn is stifled along with the realization
that waking up next to someone can either be
a blessing or a curse
she considered asking for directions to the front door
but that would mean disturbing the sure-footed peace
that settled in next to her
she was here
she would be again tomorrow
the alarm would go off
just as it always did
she would wait for that

peace
enters
another
child's
ear
through long-winding roads
once the path worn round
the old broken elm
and standing there
contemplating the lapsed sturdiness
of it all
you became the roaming spider and
the hungry locust
the tall valiant grass and
the happy cattail
and every mirrored child
knew his way
from home to there
and back again

take it out back, i say
and you do
scooping up the
lifeless gray remains
like you
might scoop up a bit
of warm earth in which to plant
a tulip bulb so gently
and carefully
waiting for the spring to
waken it finally
the long sleep of winter
ended
but not for this little house mouse
the one who ate through the
cheerios box and caused
me more than once to climb
on top of the kitchen counter
it's so small really
our eyes meet
are you sure it's not just sleeping
the back door slams
and you don't come in for
some time

cracked earth girl by Regina C J Green
cracked earth girl
childhood a dry bed of memories
sun-baked exhortations
and wallowing efforts
make for dull eyes
blue turned to crusty brown
a falling away of skin
leaves falling
earth falling
head falling
watering hole past the stage
of caring
forgotten dreams
dried up dreams
cracked earth girl
parched inflamed gone dead
it takes very little effort
to fall asleep now
