In Full Bloom by Sandy Sue Benitez

He told me
I was a calla in full bloom
trapped inside a paper vase.

I wasn't sure what to say

so I smiled politely
and walked away. Towards the lilacs.

They offered me water
for parched eyes.

I was home now

but the walls needed to be scrubbed.
The rudeness of time
had changed them from purple
to grey.

And he was a thorn I would pull

when the pain was gone
leaving me numb
from the heart down.

I really like the voice Sandy has used in this poem, the narrator seems so self possessed until the heartbreaking ending.

The first stanza seems tender, until each successive line creates more and more tension.

The last line is great.

Hi Juliet,
Thanks for posting this poem in your wonderful poetry blog. Just wanted to let everyone know that I go by my "real name" Sandy Sue Benitez now instead of the pen name Sandy Hiss.

The last stanza--artful lines conveying such depth of emotion. Well balanced and skillfully written.
